Good morning, Robina.

The suburb is buzzing this week.

There’s been plenty of chatter around Apple Robina, big questions about thousands of new homes coming to the area, and important updates for anyone travelling along Gooding Drive.

But it’s not all serious stuff.

We’re also celebrating local heroes, sharing things to do this weekend, highlighting local businesses, and keeping you updated on what’s happening in Robina’s property market.

Here’s everything you need to know this week, without the noise.

THIS WEEK IN ROBINA

LOCAL NEWS

Apple Store Robina Is Copping It on Reddit and Locals Aren’t Holding Back

A thread on r/GoldCoast asking whether Apple Robina is now "the worst retail experience on the Gold Coast" has been making the rounds this week. The core complaints: a confusing multi-queue system for online pickups, and floor staff who apparently give off the energy of doing you a personal favour by acknowledging you exist.

The Robina store serves the entire southern Gold Coast corridor - so when the experience turns into a frustrating exercise in queue navigation, people notice and they talk about it.

The thread has sparked a broader conversation about premium retail service standards on the Coast. The consensus so far is not particularly kind to Apple.

DEVELOPMENT

State Government Fast-Tracks 2,500 Homes and 20-Storey Towers on Robina’s Border

The Queensland Government has approved the Lakesview masterplan via its State Facilitated Development pathway - a fast-track process that bypasses standard council planning. The 25-hectare site fronting Gooding Drive will eventually hold 2,500 homes, with towers ranging from 2 to 20 storeys alongside public open green spaces. Developer Walker Group is managing the project.

Stage 1A kicks things off with 159 dwellings across a 7-storey affordable housing block and a 9-storey market-rate building.

Locals are raising hard questions about whether Gooding Drive can absorb thousands more daily trips, and whether nearby schools have the capacity for a rapid population surge. The State argues the development is critical to addressing the region's housing shortage.

Robina Roos Director Wins Queensland’s AFL Volunteer of the Year

Leigh Philpot, Junior Football Director at the Robina Mudgeeraba Roos AFC, has been named Queensland's AFL Volunteer of the Year. It is the kind of recognition that rarely makes front pages but reflects years of quiet, consistent work building pathways for young players in the area.

The Roos have also locked in a new partnership with United GC Netball Club, sharing facilities and cross-promoting youth programs - a practical win for local sporting families managing multiple kids in multiple codes.

Good on ya, Leigh.

SAFETY

Robina Parkway Crash Data Is In. It Confirms What Locals Already Knew.

Newly updated 10-year road safety data has formally confirmed elevated injury statistics at two Robina Parkway intersections - Cheltenham Drive and Laver Drive. The numbers validate what residents have been saying for years: the merging design is dangerous.

Nearly every Robina resident passes through at least one of these intersections daily - to reach the M1, the hospital precinct, or the Town Centre. Locals are now pushing council to prioritise upgrades before new developments at Cascade Robina and the Lakesview corridor add even more cars to the mix.

4 AM Police Escorts and a Full Weekend Rail Shutdown: What Gooding Drive Residents Need to Know

Fulton Hogan is delivering oversized pedestrian footbridge sections for the new Merrimac Station along westbound Gooding Drive, with police-escorted convoys running between 7 PM and 6 AM through July and August. If you live near the rail reserve, expect noise, vibrations, flashing safety lights, and the occasional 4 AM rumble.

Mark this in the calendar: a complete rail track shutdown runs from 6 AM Saturday 25 July to 6 PM Sunday 26 July. Trains will not run during that window - replacement railbuses will cover the Gold Coast line.

If you commute by train, plan your weekend around it now.

PLANNING UPDATE
178 Gooding Drive, Merrimac - Heavy Vehicle Transport Depot DA
A development application has been lodged to construct a low-impact industry facility and heavy vehicle transport depot at 178 Gooding Drive - directly on the Robina-Merrimac postcode boundary. If approved, commercial trucks would regularly navigate the same roundabouts that families use for the morning school run. Given Gooding Drive is already under significant construction pressure from the Merrimac Station night works, adding a heavy vehicle depot to the same corridor is likely to generate strong community feedback. The application is available for public comment via the Gold Coast City Council planning portal.

DEBATE OF THE WEEK

Club Robina just spent $5 million on a makeover. Love the new look - or miss the old-school bowlo?

The Club Robina renovation is getting strong reviews from members who have seen the finished result. But a sleek new bistro and bar is a long way from the carpet and timber panelling of the original. Some locals are stoked. Others are quietly nostalgic.

LEGEND OF THE WEEK:

Leigh Philpot - Robina Mudgeeraba Roos AFC
